Donald Knuth & Metafont; Research
In 1977 Donald Knuth started work on an algorithmic program that would culminate in the digital ages first creative and typographic breakthrough; Metafont. The program's avant garde take on digital typography, broke letterforms down into equitable forms and manipulable numeric figures, the mathematic essence of a letter. It allowed for the user to completely manipulate these structures and produce custom faces built on the interaction with pure typographic figures and co ordinated systems. A first, but now common example of digital interaction and user defined outcomes with typographic design.
